Auriemma Apologizes for Postgame Clash With Staley
UConn women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma issued a statement apologizing for his actions during a heated postgame exchange with South Carolina coach Dawn Staley after Friday's NCAA Final Four semifinal. Auriemma approached Staley aggressively at the end of the game in Phoenix, Arizona, leading to a visible shouting match. He cited his upset over an alleged pregame handshake delay, despite video showing them shaking hands.
In his social media statement, Auriemma said, "There’s no excuse for how I handled the end of the game vs. South Carolina. It’s unlike what I do and what our standard is here at Connecticut." He added that his reaction was uncalled for and apologized to South Carolina's staff and team, emphasizing that the focus should remain on their performance.
Staley, responding to ESPN, affirmed her integrity and noted she shook hands with UConn's staff pregame. During an in-game ESPN interview, Auriemma had criticized Staley for sideline behavior toward officials and highlighted a missed call on a UConn player's ripped jersey. Postgame, he declined further details, saying he had told the truth and that Staley did not like it.
South Carolina defeated UConn on April 3, 2026, at the arena in Phoenix, ending the Huskies' 54-game winning streak and perfect season. The matchup rematched the previous year's national championship, won by UConn.
