The National Football League (NFL) and the NFL Referees Association (NFLRA), which represents the league's on-field officials, remain in negotiations over a new collective bargaining agreement set to expire after the 2025 season.[1][2]
Pro Football Talk first reported that the league could resort to replacement referees if talks become contentious and extend into the coming months.[1] ESPN reviewed internal NFL emails stating the league has begun laying the groundwork for potential use of replacement officials ahead of the 2026 season.[3]
Such a move would recall the 2012 season, when the NFL employed replacement referees for the first three weeks amid a labor dispute.[4] The replacements, drawn largely from Division II colleges, high school and minor leagues, presided over a controversial "Fail Mary" play on September 24, 2012, during a Monday Night Football game between the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.[4][5] Seahawks receiver Golden Tate and Packers defender M.D. Jennings appeared to simultaneously possess a Hail Mary pass in the end zone, with officials awarding a touchdown to Seattle for a 14-12 victory.[5]
ESPN college football analyst Pat McAfee, a former Indianapolis Colts punter from 2007 to 2013, criticized the prospect of replacements on X, calling the 2012 period "terrible days in the NFL."[6] McAfee, host of "The Pat McAfee Show," emphasized the need for officials to prioritize accountability, adapt to technology and commit to the game's integrity.[6]
In 2023, the NFL stated it remained "focused on implementing changes to the agreement in ways that will improve the performance of our game officials, increase accountability, and ensure that the highest-performing officials are officiating our highest profile games."[1]
