Eugenio Chacarra claimed the DP World India Championship by two strokes on Sunday, sealing his third victory of the season and vaulting to the top of the Race to Dubai standings. The Spaniard closed out the tournament at 21 under par at Delhi Golf Club, capping a weather-disrupted week with a blistering 9-under 63 and a steadier closing 70.

A Season Peaking at the Right Time

Chacarra's win in New Delhi extends a remarkable run of late-season form. He arrived in India off the back of a third-place finish at the FedEx Open de France and a runner-up showing at the Open de España presented by Madrid the week before. Combined with earlier victories at the KLM Open and the DS Automobiles 83° Open d'Italia in June, the result confirms Chacarra as the DP World Tour's standout performer heading into the season's climax. The 26-year-old Madrid native overtook Patrick Reed at the summit of the Race to Dubai, with Rory McIlroy also in the mix as the campaign enters its final stretch next month.

Reed, who carded a 69 on Sunday, finished tied for 23rd at 8 under, while McIlroy struggled to a closing 74 to end in a share of 42nd, four shots further back. "Two of the best players in the world are coming for me now," Chacarra said, "and I know they are not going to make it easy."

From LIV Golf to the Top of the Leaderboard

Chacarra's path to this moment has been unconventional. After finishing as the world's No. 2 amateur during his time at Oklahoma State, he turned professional in 2022 and initially competed on the LIV Golf circuit. His breakthrough on the DP World Tour came via an invitation to the Hero Indian Open in May 2025, which he won to earn full tour status. India, it seems, has become fertile ground for his career resurgence. "I know what I'm capable of," he said. "I was one of the best amateurs in the world and I wanted to be one of the best professional players in the world."

Ryder Cup Ambitions Take Shape

European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald was on hand to greet Chacarra behind the 18th green, embracing him with the words: "Well done, another win. Top of the list. Keep doing it." The victory strengthens Chacarra's case for a spot on Europe's team for next year's matches at Adare Manor in Ireland - and he made clear he isn't aiming merely to be a captain's pick. "I've told Luke I want to be on that team by not just a pick - I wanted to be one of the six automatic spots," he said. "We're still a year away but I know what I'm capable of."

Hillier Impresses as McIlroy Falls Away

New Zealand's Daniel Hillier was the closest challenger, finishing within five strokes of the winner after rounds of 64 and 67 over the weekend. Adrian Meronk and Angel Hidalgo shared third place at 15 under following a congested final day in which weather delays forced many players to complete their third rounds before starting the last.

Chacarra admitted the physical toll of early starts affected his finish. "The last round was tough - it was really tiring waking up three days in a row at 4 a.m.," he said. "My body wasn't there, I didn't feel good."

McIlroy, the tournament's marquee draw, played his final 36 holes without his driver and managed only 2 over for that stretch. Sitting third in the Race to Dubai, he will skip next week's Genesis Championship in South Korea - where Chacarra is set to compete - before returning for the season-ending events in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. "Didn't feel I was at my sharpest," McIlroy said, "so looking forward to getting home and practicing and feeling like I turn up at those last two events ready to play and ready to go."
